Orb commissions b&w graphics for internals to illustrate each story. Send samples of your work and you may be commissioned. Payment: $AU30.00 on publication.
Small b&w pieces, icons or cartoons may also be accepted as stand-alone pieces. Never send originals until your work has been accepted.
Deadline for artwork
Cover art may be submitted at any time to Orb, but it must be full colour and use an “orb” theme — basically, something round.
Orb publishes internal b&w artwork on commission to accompany/reflect each individual story. Commissions will be sent out 15-22 March. Final artwork for commissioned stories
must be received by by 15 May.
Unsolicited artwork may be submitted at any time.Orb may consider unsolicited b&w internal artwork at any time, and may, upon reviewing such artwork, either offer to publish
the artwork or commission that artist to produce a piece to accompany a story.
Always enquire before attaching a file. While it may be easier for you to send a file, a fiction manuscript assessor has to spend time and money on printing out the document. Orb
prefers to read story submission on hard copy.
Only if you have ascertained that Orb will receive an electronic file, send it free of viruses, in accessible software and formatted according to the guidelines on this page.
Assume that we will drop the bundle, and that there will be pages all over the place. Sometimes the piles of clients’ work becomes entangled, and a letter saying the author wants the editor to ignore page 33 can become attached to someone else’s work or lost if it doesn’t have a printed name on it. A
scrawled signature isn’t very helpful in identifying a letter.
It is essential that you number and name each page, and that your name and a short version of your contact details are on every single piece of paper you submit. Make sure these
details are also clearly shown on the front of the manuscript and on your cover letter.
Orb is looking for original speculative fiction, fantasy, horror, science fiction, magical realism, new weird and non-realist fiction by residents/citizens of Australia and New
Experimental fiction pieces and poetry may be considered if the format and approach is essential to the content, but the premise should be speculative.
Orb takes original, previously unpublished, stand-alone short stories up to 25,000 words, negotiable. No reprints, novel segments or series. Payment: $AU50.00 on publication.
Obtain a copy of Orb or similar journal if you are unacquainted with the genre or have not read in it for years.

Reviews, articles, interviews and opinion pieces are welcome to 5,000 words. These may also be published on the website. Payment: $AU50.00 on publication.
Pieces must be related to speculative fiction, personnel, events, publishing and news. Science articles are also accepted if they are of interest to the SF community.

To be included in the next issue of Orb speculative fiction, your review of a speculative fiction product (book, short story, anthology, film, artwork, play and so on) must be
received by Orb by 15 March. If you intend to submit a review, please request a review guideline sheet from Orb. Your review will not be accepted unless it conforms to these conventions.
